Where do I get information on commuting options?

Dear Helen:
Our company is growing faster than my staff can make up ID badges. We have to relocate and are considering several sites, none of which offer much parking. We want to provide our employees with as many commute options as possible. How do I find out which of these sites is best served by public transportation?
Human Resources Manager

Dear Manager:
First, let me congratulate you on having the foresight to consider the potential of public transportation when choosing the future location of your company. I can't tell you how many letters I get from frustrated employees complaining because their company moved to the boonies, and they feel they have no choice but to drive to work alone.

That said, give King County Metro a call at 206-684-4444. Tell them the locations of the prospective sites, and they will put you in touch with the Employer Transportation Representative for those areas. These folks will help you put together a comprehensive program to help both your employees and your bottom line. If any employees commute from Snohomish or Pierce counties, call Community Transit at 1-800-562-1375 or Pierce Transit at 1-800-562-8109. I also suggest giving Sound Transit a jingle (206-398-5000) to see if their express buses, commuter rail, or light rail serve, or will serve, any of your possible locations.

Remember, transit is not your only option. Rideshare Operations at King County Metro (206-625-4500) can help form vanpools and carpools among your employees, as well as with other employees in the area. The Bicycle Alliance (206-224-9252) will tell you if there are good bike routes to your proposed sites. And, of course, you can always lessen your parking woes by adding telework and compressed workweek options. Give Commuter Challenge a call at 206-389-8658 for more information on these work options.

Isn't moving the biggest hassle? Good luck!
