Innovative "day
off" coupons popular with carpoolers, bicyclists, walkers In 2003, FileNet implemented a "day off" program for employees who use non-SOV modes for their commutes. The incentive rewards employees who carpool, walk or bicycle to work at least two days a week. Each month, employees who have used one of the designated modes submit a form showing the days they used alternative commute modes and receive one coupon for each qualifying week, up to a maximum of 5 coupons per month. Once 22 coupons have been accumulated, the employee receives a day off. This innovative reward system shows a strong commitment on behalf of FileNets management team. "Our program has been so successful because a lot of people will do just about anything to get a day off with pay," said Employee Transportation Coordinator Sheila Rowland. "Thats what gets our people on this program." FileNets former ETC and current CTR program staff have been extremely instrumental in FileNet becoming a community leader on commute trip reduction and brought the company back into compliance with CTR requirements. Ongoing promotion and employee incentives encourage employees to give alternative commute modes a try. FileNets program provides excellent support to its employees who wish to use alternative commute modes by establishing a responsibility policy requiring managers to support CTR programs as well as schedule meetings and work activities during normal business hours. FileNet also has also implemented a comprehensive subsidy program that includes transit subsidies, reserved HOV parking, telework and flextime schedules, and the "day off" incentive for carpoolers, walkers and bicyclists. FileNets commitment has been demonstrated by its continuous reduction of trips measured by the CTR Survey.
*Some definitions: An ETC is the staff-level employee transportation coordinator responsible for the daily administration of the transportation program. SOV stands for single-occupant vehicle, and CTR for commute trip reduction. |
