Corporate values put priority on the environment
CH2M HILL is an employee-owned, multinational firm providing engineering, construction, operations and related services to clients on six continents. CH2M HILL helps clients apply technology and safeguard the environment. Its commitment to the environment is embraced by management, which has continued to enhance an already successful employee transportation program and by employees who regularly leave their cars at home and find an alternative way to work. Since 1993, CH2M HILL has reduced its single occupant vehicle commute rate from 61 to 31 percent. It has exceeded the goals established by the Commute Trip Reduction Law each time that it has been measured. For its extraordinary dedication and results, CH2M HILL has earned a Commuter Challenge Diamond Ring award. CH2M HILL also was recognized by Commuter Challenge in 1995, 1997, 1999 and 2000.

“In our Corporate Sustainability Policy, we have made a clear choice to manage our business, in partnership with our clients and communities, in ways that support the economic and social quality of human life and help to preserve Earth's ecosystems for future generations,” said Katherine Lombardo, senior vice president, manager, Northwest Region. “Doing what we can to reduce commute trips by not just meeting, but exceeding the CTR law requirement supports our corporate values.”

CH2M HILL made two major additions to its already comprehensive transportation program during 2001. The first addition is the FlexCar program. FlexCar provides participating employees with a vehicle to use for personal trips during work hours. Previously, employees could pay to use fleet vehicles for this purpose if they were available.

“I've already heard from many of our new FlexPass bus riders that this was the piece of the puzzle they were waiting for before jumping on the bus,” said Program Manager Todd Slind. “It is really a win, win situation. Our fleet vehicles are more available for business use and our employees have better personal mobility during work hours.”

In addition, CH2M HILL began converting its fleet vehicle cars to gasoline-electric hybrid cars. The company is making this shift to reduce the air quality impact of non-commute work related trips made by its employees.

One key to CH2M HILL's continued success is open communications. The company encourages employees to provide input regarding transportation needs. Once needs are identified, an employee transportation committee and management work creatively to address them. Company representatives are also active at the local and state level to address transportation problems and implement solutions.
