Bus riding is the norm at Navigant International Northwest
Navigant International Northwest specializes in planning and arranging corporate travel. In addition, employees do an excellent job of travelling around Puget Sound, with half of the 80 employees commuting by transit. The company also has ten carpoolers, one bicyclist, one walker and three teleworkers.

Accepting Navigant International Northwest's Diamond Award is Employee Transportation Coordinator Ruby Ann Haynie.

With 50 percent of its workforce riding the bus, Navigant International Northwest is a recipient of a Commuter Challenge Diamond Award for transit.

When located in the Washington Mutual Tower in downtown Seattle, the travel agency offered no employee parking and had excellent bus service. In May 2001, Navigant moved to Mercer Street, where some parking is available, but not enough for all employees, and bus service is limited.

The company's FlexPass program provides Metro, Sound Transit, Kitsap Transit and Community Transit monthly bus passes for $10.

In addition to FlexPass, the organization offers Guaranteed Ride Home, which provides taxi rides to employees who rideshare or take the bus to work and need to leave for an emergency or have to work unexpected overtime. The company also allows flextime, compressed work weeks and telework.

“Before our move, 68 percent of our employees used transit to commute at least once a week,”said Employee Transportation Coordinator Ruby Ann Haynie. “At our new location we have less bus service, yet 50 percent of our employees still use transit. We were able to shift most of the others into carpools.”

Strong management support is key to Navigant's success. In addition, the company has a Transit Committee that worked during the move to Mercer Street to make the transition smooth.

“Even though we moved to a location with less bus service, investing in FlexPass is still a priority,” said Keith Taylor, northwest regional president. “It is key to retaining and recruiting good employees, and it helps us do our part to increase mobility in the crowded Mercer Corridor.”
